Las Vegas

The city never sleeps, it hums and vibrates like living entity. The life it holds squirms with the supernatural, pushing on the the boundaries of reality, struggling and moving like a fetus within the womb. Why does Los Vegas resonate with such spiritual unrest? Some would say it is the pulsing mass of human dreams crushed beneath the weight of sin and death or that is it the cycle of the lady of luck. These things stir the supernatural, but they are just food for the true magic. The truth is much simpler, a matter of human placed geography and the magic of thaumaturgy. Nestled inside the state of Nevada is Clark County, it'self a thaumaturgical representation of the greater state, and in the center is the world. Every city, every great monument, every dramatic theme rises like juggernauts over the flat endless dessert horizon.

Many of these casinos and tourist raps are modeled portals and can be traveled through, gateways to the cities they represent and to the conceptual existences they hint at. Like all gateways, they are opened with a key, these keys can be anything, but are specific to the lock, and attempting to open a gateway with the wrong key can have disastrous effects. These keys are held in check by a variety of Gatekeepers of different political and supernatural alignments. In order to use them the gatekeeper must be found or the key must be stolen. Not all keys are found in the pockets of gatekeepers, some have been lost to the winds of fate and time. However, not all the missing of Las Vegas are victims of crime, supernatural or otherwise. That missing lost child may not have been kidnapped, but instead found a strange glittering coin and accidentally opened the gate to a fairy realm.

The riskiest thing with gates is that they open both ways, and things that do not belong to our world will often leak from their world into ours.

"The city's frightening now. That's the basis of my reaction to Las Vegas. It's not the city I wrote about. It's not the same place at all."'' - Hunter S. Thompson
